Shawl Ministry History

In 1998, Janet Bristow and Victoria Galo, two graduates of the 1997 Women's Leadership Institute at The Hartford Seminary in Hartford, Connecticut gave birth to a ministry as a result of their experience in this program of applied Feminist Spirituality under the direction of Professor Miriam Therese Winter, MMS.Shawl Ministry
Care and the love of knitting (and crochet) have been combined into a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace. Many blessings are knitted into every shawl. The knitter begins each shawl with prayers for the recipient.  Intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. When the shawl is completed it is offered a final ritual before being sent along its way.

As this gift has been sent along, some recipients have continued the kindness by making one themselves and passing it onto someone in need.
Thus, the blessing is rippled from person to person, with both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God!

In the Fall of 2005, Jeri Chaitin started the 139th Shawl Ministry at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Portland Oregon.  Since then, over 100 shawls have been blessed and given to people in need of love, hope, healing and comfort.

Knit Version
This works very well using the Lions Brand Homespun yarn found at Fred Meyer, Target, Joann’s Fabrics. You can also get it at the Lions Brand or Joann’s Fabric websites.

You will need 3 skeins of the Lions Brand HOMESPUN yarn and size 13 single pointed knitting needles. Our experience shows that metal needles are pretty slippery so if you can choose plastic or wood.

Cast on 63 stitches or any multiple of three, in odd numbers: 57 or 63 works well.
First row Knit 3, purl 3 to the end of the row.
Repeated row Turn and knit the purl stitches and purl the knit stitches.
Before starting the 3rd skein, cut your yarn for the fringe, which can be from 3 inches to 9 inches long. Knot the ends of the fringes to keep the yarn from frizzing.
