Fruits of the Spirit - Sonja Miller

Fruits of the Spirit takes its name from Galatians 5:22 which reads, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. The Fruits of the Spirit Guild at All Saints has its mission to utilize its members fruits to serve the church and the community.

Fruits of the Spirit is open to all members of the congregation and is not limited to women, although the members are currently mostly working mothers in their 30s and 40s.

Major events held by the Fruits of the Spirit guild include the Super Bowl Sunday Chili Feed and Fashion Show, the Ice Cream Social and the Christmas Bazaar. In addition, the guild typically offers its help to the annual youth fundraiser, to community service events such as Habitat for Humanity and Hands on Portland, and is currently discussing lending support to Rahabs Sisters, a new group started by several women deacons and clergy in the Episcopal diocese, as well as some Mennonite and non-affiliated leaders.

The Christmas Bazaar is usually held in the middle of November with plenty of time to shop for Christmas. Local craft people and vendors are invited to rent a table to sell their wares.  Fruits of the Spirit serves lunch for hungry shoppers and vendors, selling bowls of homemade soup donated by FOS members, bread and cookies.  The proceeds from the kitchen help support Fruits of the Spirit projects through out the year.  The proceeds from the table rentals support all ministries of the parish.

The Chili Feed & Fashion Show is held every Super Bowl Sunday after the 10:15 service. Members of the Fruits of the Spirit guild prepare a variety of chili, hot dogs and other dishes and invite the church members to join for fellowship and to view a fashion show of some items for sale at the Mustard Seed. A large number of children and a few adults eagerly act as models. The Chili Feed is a fellowship event, not meant for fundraising, so ticket sales provide only to meet expenses.

The first Sunday in September after Labor Day is the Ice Cream Social to kick off the beginning of Sunday School. Scoops of ice cream with many delectable toppings are offered in addition to hot dogs and a vegetarian alternative.  After feasting on ice cream, carnival games are available for the children. Sometimes the adults have more fun running the games than the kids do!

Lay Readers, Lectors, and Chalice Bearers - Darek Jenkins

Lay participation in the Liturgy.  Since ancient times certain portions of public worship have been recognized as belonging to the laity. Sacraments are priestly duties; the liturgy of the word is lay ministry.  To participate in this ministry is to lay claim to the theological truth that the Word Of God belongs to all the people.  Public worship does not happen because the priest is present, but rather, because all the people have gathered to worship.

The roles of lay people in the liturgy are filled with symbolism and traditions; the rewards are spiritual. A description of some of these lay ministries follows.

Title III, canon 3, section 5 (a): A Lay Eucharistic Minister is a person licensed to this extraordinary ministry…

(1) Administering the elements at any celebration of Holy Eucharist in the absence of a sufficient number of Priests or Deacons. (Editors note: This ministry is authorized and licensed by the Bishop.)

Title III, canon 3, section 7:A Lay Reader is a person who regularly leads public worship under the direction of a Member of the Clergy in charge of the congregation. Training and licensing shall be under the authority of the Bishop.

Title III, canon 3, section 8:A Lector is a person trained in reading of the Word and appointed without license by the Member of the Clergy in charge of the congregation to read lessons or lead the Prayers of the People.

Our Priest has further stipulated that all who participate in these ministries at All Saints must be Members in good standing.
